Mahamadou Lamine Sagna

Dr. Mahamadou Lamine Sagna is the Director of Africana Studies and Associate Professor of Sociology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), with expertise spanning sociology, anthropology, and economics. Holding a Ph.D. in Sociology, a Master’s in Anthropology with a specialization in Ethnic-psychiatry, and an MBA, he brings a rich interdisciplinary background to his teaching and research. At WPI, he teaches courses such as Cultural Forms in Political Spheres, Money and Religion, African Development and Globalization, Ethics and AI, and Social Justice and Engineering, where he is known for fostering critical thinking through clear and insightful communication. His research focuses on poverty, monetary practices, economic innovation, and social risks, with his influential book Money and Society analyzing how individuals in sub-Saharan and North Africa use cultural and social capital to navigate financial uncertainties. He also authored Cornel West Matters, linking Cornel West’s thought to contemporary philosophy, African and African American history, and pragmatism. Before WPI, Dr. Sagna taught at institutions such as the American University of Nigeria, Schiller International University, Princeton University, and served as Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland–College Park. Beyond academia, he founded “Re-Source/Sununet,” a Senegalese Diaspora organization fostering transnational collaboration for Senegal’s development. A polyglot fluent in French, English, Mandingo, and Wolof, he engages across cultures with ease. His career reflects a deep commitment to bridging knowledge, culture, and practice to address pressing social challenges and advance equity and justice globally.
